Isaiah 9:2-7; Titus 2:11-14; Luke 2:1-20

Introduction

Today, let us reflect upon the profound message of peace that resonates through the scriptures. In Isaiah 9:2-7, we find the promise of a great light shining upon those walking in darkness, a light that brings joy and freedom. This light is none other than the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, whose reign knows no end.

When the lights go off in our community, the common sound you will hear is awwwwww... Everyone is saddened because, walking in darkness is characterized by injury, accidents, and fear, meanwhile, everything ceases for us. As soon as the lights come back on, there is this great sound of relief amidst jubilation and happiness.

Exegesis

The coming of the Light of the world brought peace to the path of mankind. The prophet tells us, "Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress." Isaiah 9:1.

Titus reminds us that the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, and teaching us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions. This grace not only redeems us but also calls us to live lives of righteousness and peace, eagerly awaiting the blessed hope of our Lord's return. It is through this hope that we find the anchor for our souls in the stormy seas of life.

The light, which is Jesus Christ, opens our eyes to godliness and worldly passions. It is your personal decision to walk in righteousness or follow worldly passions. The right choice you make is what establishes the peace of God in your life.

Worldly passion will grant you a temporal or short-lived false peace but the end is grieve and full of sorrow. But when we come into "...the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good," (Titus 2:13-14) our eternal peace is assured.

In Luke's reading, we witness the humble birth of our Saviour. The angels proclaimed "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:14). The birth of Jesus ushered in a new era of peace, inviting all who believe to experience reconciliation with God and with one another.

Precious one, Jesus Christ has come to us with the 'Peace' we so much yearn for. In a world often marked by turmoil and strife, the peace promised through Christ is not merely the absence of conflict but a deep, abiding serenity that comes from being in the right relationship with God. It's a peace that transcends understanding and is made manifest in our lives through the transformative power of Christ.

Prof. Adjaottor puts it, Peace is that inner quietness that enables a person to keep calm amidst life's threatening and challenging situations. Peace is of God. Peace comes from God. You need Jesus Christ (Prince of Peace) to be at Peace with God. You need Peace to be at Peace with yourself. You need Peace to live in Peace with other people.

Jesus admonished us saying, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27). This is a great caution to us that, what the Prince of Peace gives us is not the same as the world may offer. Therefore, I ask, "Who offered the peace you are enjoying now?" What is the source of all that you brag about?

Let us understand that Peace is the presence of harmony, tranquility, and a shared understanding. It begins within ourselves, as we strive to find inner calm amidst life's challenges. When Christ is in you, Peace is found within. The journey to peace involves self-reflection, forgiveness, and a willingness to let go of resentment and let God.

In our relationships with others, fostering peace requires empathy and open communication. As Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers," reminding us of the active role we can play in resolving disputes and building bridges between individuals. By seeking common ground and understanding different perspectives, we contribute to a more harmonious community.

On a global scale, peace calls for cooperation and diplomacy. Nations come together, not in the pursuit of power, but in the pursuit of shared prosperity and security. It is a collective responsibility to address the root causes of conflicts and work towards a world where the dignity and rights of every individual are respected.

Moreover, peace involves stewardship of the environment. The interconnectedness of our planet means that environmental harmony is integral to our well-being. As stewards of the Earth, we are called to protect and preserve the resources that sustain life, fostering a world where nature and humanity coexist in balance. At the birth of Jesus, the flock on the field had angelic visit, the sheep in the manger received the Saviour, and the star became the first witness of the Prince of Peace.

Christ is the Reason for the Season

As we navigate the challenges of our time, let us be reminded of the message of Christmas — the message of Peace. Let the light of Christ shine in our hearts, dispelling the darkness within and around us. May the grace that brings salvation also empower us to live as peacemakers, extending God's love to those in need.

Conclusion

This Christmas season, let us embrace the Prince of Peace and share His message with the world. In closing, may we carry the message of peace in our hearts and sow seeds of harmony wherever we go. For in the pursuit of peace, we find not only a path to serenity but a shared vision of a brighter, more compassionate world. May the peace that surpasses all understanding guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, and may we be instruments of His peace in a world yearning for hope and reconciliation. Amen.

Merry Christmas

Shalom aleikhem...
