Colossians 1:27
Introduction
In a world that constantly evolves, the foundation of a thriving nation lies not only in economic prowess but also in the holistic development of its future citizens. Holistic education, encompassing academic, emotional, social, and spiritual facets, emerges as the beacon guiding children towards becoming well-rounded individuals. The Presbyterian Church of Ghana which is one of the major stakeholders of education in Ghana drives on educating the 'head, hand and heart' wholistically. This approach not only shapes their character but also holds the promise of contributing to national development with integrity. Colossians 1:27 encapsulates the essence of this holistic approach, emphasizing the importance of Christian development in the broader context of education. Without Christ in education, we only produce intellectual thieves.
Holistic Education is a Comprehensive Framework
"And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man."(Luke 2:52; cf. 1 Samuel 2:26)
Holistic education transcends traditional academic boundaries. It seeks to nurture a child's intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions. This is the kind of education Jesus Christ was raised. Academic excellence, while crucial, is just one piece of the puzzle. Emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and a sense of spiritual purpose play equally pivotal roles in shaping a child's overall development for a nation.
A Spiritual Lens on Holistic Education
Colossians 1:27 reminds us that "Christ in you, the hope of glory" signifies the profound impact of spiritual development on an individual's life. Integrating spiritual teachings into education provides children with a moral compass, fostering empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards others. This spiritual foundation becomes a cornerstone for building a just and harmonious society.
The social evil destroying nations today - corruption, racism, injustice, intolerance, selfishness, immorality, etc. are all with us because we have taken Jesus Christ who is the Alpha and the Omega from our nurturing life.
The unending examples are around you. Without Christ, what seems right even in the eyes of men becomes our 'Achilles heel.' (cf. Prov. 21:2; 26:12)
Contributing to National Development
Let me share with you a few points to establish our hope for national development reflecting on Jesus' growth in Luke 2:52.
1. Character Building: 'Jesus grew in favour with men.' Holistic education instils virtues such as integrity, resilience, and empathy, creating a generation of individuals who can navigate challenges with grace. A nation comprised of morally upright citizens forms a resilient and stable societal structure. (Proverbs 22:6)
Consider the behaviours of our young people today. If you are unaware of the future of this nation, go and see them on social media. Which way have the elders of today pointed the young ones.
2. Innovation and Creativity: 'Jesus grew in wisdom.' Discovery is about uncovering what God has created for our own benefit. By nurturing creativity and critical thinking alongside traditional academic subjects, holistic education empowers children to become innovative problem solvers. This skill set is invaluable in addressing complex societal issues and fostering technological advancements crucial for national progress.
3. Social Cohesion: 'Jesus grew in stature and in favour with men'. Social intelligence and advocacy, cultivated through holistic education, fosters inclusivity and understanding among diverse communities. It is the guarantee for a peaceful world all over. A united society, respecting differences and working collaboratively, is fundamental to national unity.
In an interconnected world, global competence is paramount. Holistic education equips children with a broad perspective, cultural sensitivity, and adaptability, enabling them to contribute meaningfully on the global stage.
4. Spiritual Sensitivity: 'Jesus grew in favour with God.' Raising the next with Christian values is the hope of a peaceful nation. Abraham shares his experience, “I did it because,... There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ Genesis 20:11.
For national development, God gives us a directive, "Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs [presidents, MPs, MMDCEs, Directors, CEOs, Assemblymen/women] of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. And let them judge the people at all times." Exodus 18:21-22.
Please note, that implementing holistic education requires a concerted effort from educators, policymakers, religious leaders, and communities. Adequate resources, training for educators, and a shift in the mindset towards valuing diverse forms of intelligence are essential steps in this journey. A total shift to focus on training the head, hands and heart (3Hs) of the individual.
Conclusion
In the pursuit of national development, fostering holistic education for children is not merely an option but a necessity. Colossians 1:27 serves as a reminder that Christian development, intertwined with other facets of education, holds the key to nurturing individuals who can contribute positively to society. As nations invest in the holistic development of their children, they sow the seeds for a future where intellect, compassion, and spirituality converge to shape a brighter, more harmonious world.
