GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Deuteronomy 34:1-12; 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8; Matthew 22:34-46

Introduction

Today, we are going to reflect on the importance of discernment and vigilance in our faith journey. There is an urgent need to be cautious and vigilant when it comes to the teachings we encounter. Let us explore this theme further.

False Teachings

According to the Bible, false teachings are teachings, beliefs, or doctrines that deviate from the true message of God as presented in the Bible. They are often considered misleading, heretical, or contradictory to the core principles of the faith. The Bible warns against false prophets and false teachings in several places, including Matthew 7:15-16, 2 Peter 2:1, and 1 Timothy 4:1. False teachings can lead people away from the truth and the proper understanding of God's word, so it's important for believers to discern and test teachings against the Scriptures to ensure they align with the Bible's teachings.

We are living in an age, where there has been a major proliferation of religious groups, doctrines, and beliefs who align themselves to Christianity. 

We have witnessed situations where some traditional fetish priests confess and accept Christ and immediately become preachers of the Gospel, and take on the sacred titles of Evangelists, Bishop, Pastor, Reverend, and Prophets. Some even established churches to become founders and general overseers. 

Precious one, under such a prevailing system, new forms of religious doctrine turn to emerge. This is the breeding ground for religious syncretism, gnosticism, and evil acts under the cover of Christianity.

The Legacy of Moses

In Deuteronomy 34, we read about the end of Moses' life and his legacy. Moses was a faithful leader who brought the Israelites out of Egypt and led them through the wilderness. His unwavering commitment to God's commandments stands as a shining example. But even Moses, the great leader, was not immune to the challenges of false teaching. We must remember that no one is exempt from the danger of being misled. Therefore, we should be diligent in studying and understanding God's word.

The Sincerity of Paul.

In 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8, the apostle Paul highlights the sincerity and integrity of his teaching. He reminds us that he did not come with deceptive words or impure motives but with a genuine desire to share the Gospel. However, he also recognized that false teachers would arise, seeking to distort the truth. This is a warning for us today – not all who claim to be teachers of the Word are genuine. We must evaluate the teachings we encounter and discern their alignment with the true message of Christ.

The Greatest Commandment

In the Matthew reading, Jesus emphasizes the greatest commandment – to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. This love serves as a litmus test for all teachings. If teaching does not promote love, compassion, and the well-being of others, we should be wary. False teaching often deviates from the core principles of love and faith, leading us away from the path of righteousness.

Let me share with you some basic ways to identify false teachings.

1. Consistency with Scripture: We learn from Moses the importance of adhering to God's word. Compare any teachings with the Bible to ensure they align with the truths found in Scripture (cf. Acts 17:11).

2. Examine the Source: Paul emphasizes the integrity of his teaching. Examine the credibility and character of the teacher and/or source of the teachings. False teachings may come from untrustworthy or deceitful individuals.

3. Love and Righteousness: Jesus Christ emphasized love for God and neighbor. False teachings often lack the core principles of love, compassion, and righteousness found in the Bible (cf. John 14:6; Eph. 4:15).

4. Test the Spirit: 1 John 4:1 advises testing the spirits to discern if they are from God. False teachings may be marked by a lack of the Holy Spirit's presence and guidance.

5. Community and Accountability: Engage with a community of believers who can provide support and discernment. The Bible encourages seeking wisdom and accountability within the body of Christ to identify and address false teachings (Hebrews 10:23-25).

Conclusion:

In a world where information is readily available and diverse teachings abound, it is crucial for us to be discerning. We must follow the example of Moses, holding firm to God's commandments. We should appreciate the sincerity of genuine teachers like Paul but also be vigilant against those who distort the truth. Above all, we must remember Jesus' command to love God and our neighbor. If a teaching does not align with love and compassion, it may be a false teaching.

Let us commit ourselves to a journey of faith marked by discernment and unwavering love for God and one another. By doing so, we will be better equipped to recognize and resist the allure of false teachings, always seeking the truth that leads to eternal life. Amen.
